Lilabati Mahavidyalaya, nestled in the serene outskirts of a bustling village called Jateswar, is home to the Department of English, immersion since its inception on 6th August 2013. The department started its general degree course the same year the College was inaugurated. Honours course commenced from 2018 academic year to cater a wide range of academic interests and career aspirations.
The department follows the undergraduate syllabus of the university of north bengal. As the majority of the students come from a rural background and vernacular schools, the department ensures providing a conducive and comfortable environment so that students get accustomed to this subject. The Department of English at Lilabati Mahavidyalaya is a cornerstone of academic excellence within the institution, dedicated to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of English language, literature, and critical thinking among undergraduate students. The department has consistently strived to uphold its commitment to quality education and holistic development. The department offers a comprehensive undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in English language skills, literature, literary criticism, and cultural studies. Courses are meticulously crafted to balance traditional and contemporary perspectives, ensuring relevance in the modern academic and professional landscape. Core courses cover areas such as English literature from various periods (Medieval, Renaissance, Modern, Post-Colonial), literary theory, linguistics and creative writing. Elective courses allow students to delve deeper into critical areas like American literature, Indian writing in English, Gender Studies etc. The department encourages interdisciplinary approaches, fostering connections between literature, history, philosophy, and social sciences.
Faculty members have publications in reputed journals; they also do presentations at national and international conferences, and participate in academic forums that contribute to the scholarly community both within and outside the institution. The library is well-stocked with a vast collection of books, journals, e-resources, and periodicals essential for research and study. The department organizes A regular Special Lecture Series where erudite academics disseminate lectures on their areas of specialization to supplement classroom learning and encourage intellectual engagement. Guest lectures by eminent scholars and writers provide valuable insights and exposure to contemporary trends in English studies. The department is committed to nurturing students not only academically but also personally and professionally. It encourages active participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities such as debates, quizzes.
